Movie Club: Judgement at Nuremberg
A seldom seen film with remarkable performances by Judy Garland, Montgomery Clift, Marlene Dietrich, Spencer Tracy, and Maximilian Schell, who won an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Judgement at Nuremberg, our second film this month, is another black and white film that stands the test of time. Directed by Stanley Kramer in 1961, and written by Abby Mann. The performances of every single actor are stellar, the speeches are worthy of memorization. We memorized them quite easily when we were children. Stanley Kramer also directed Inherit the Wind, also starring Spencer Tracy. Both films fictionalize real characters and reenact very real episodes in our history. Both films take on the hard subjects of their time, and remarkably our time as well. Darwin and the Bible. Church and state. Nazis and the attempted obliteration of all the Jews in Europe.
