Have you ever had an inexplicable encounter with a baby or a dog? A moment where infant turns from the arms of their mother and walks across the table and holds you as if she always knew you.
Rickie, hope you feel better soon. I saw you had to cancel The Kate and Rockport too.
I know you’ll be back when the time is right and the full Rickie can give and receive all that the night brings, which is not possible when one is sick with a cold, that cold is like a separate being, a no-fun third party interfering with the spiritual ebb and flow that your music and our hearts and your heart and our presence requires. Until that day, see you here on the fish sticks!
Rickie. My wife and I are coming to see your show this Saturday on Cape Cod as part of our wedding anniversary weekend. Chuck E.’s in Love was the very first song I played on the radio at my first radio station on air personality gig. Been in love with you ever since. Ken & Beth
I'm so glad you are taking care of yourself - it's very hard to find time to do that when you work in the music industry and yep, it's ever more important as the years on the odometer tick over relentlessly. Take good care of you!
I am so sorry you are sick and feeling like shit. I also am sorry you had to cancel, but it was definitely the right thing to do. We love you and want you to feel better- and hear you sing when you can. And I love the fact that your whole world is turning into a Beatles song. Also, I sent it, but not sure you got.....Nick Hornby's piece on Substack where you are mentioned. He is one of my very favorite writers too- and it made me smile. Take care of yourself- dear Rickie......
You are a treasure, so please take care of yourself. Your health is THE most important thing, obviously. Speaking as a fan who has bought tickets and attended many of your shows, i would rather have you cancel, take care of yourself and get well than perform a show(s) when you need to rest and recover. Hope you feel better soon!
"The show must go on" is attributed to PT Barnum... so you know you must not feel guilty anymore about cancelling.
Also, it isn't like a Broadway show... you don't have stand-ins. When you are sick you should always cancel and get well. We... your fans... understand and want you to take care of yourself. Chrissie Hynde had to cancel a bunch of shows... Bruce, too. You are in good company.
Rest, stay hydrated, get well. Let It Be. We Can Work It Out. And we will Get Back (to our seats in the audience for whenever you reschedule shows).
Rest in the Mother dear Rickie. You are in my prayers. I was in the audience in Tucson the evening of your 64 bday. You were amazing and I will never forget that nite! XX
I have those encounters. They are energetic exchanges. It can happen, and does, with adult humans too. But adult humans are more self-conscious, which has a tendency to cause energetic blockages. Energetic blockages are the sites and moments of miscommunication and doubt. Wow, I wasn’t planning on writing any of that! I wanted to comment on ‘the show music go on’. So briefly, as a performer I know this angst and fear of not putting on the best show. Just imagine your friend's mother who doesn’t know your music, to think for the rest of her life that she doesn’t understand why people are so in love in Rickie Lee Jones and her music. We can kind of get that she was sick, but that’s no substitute for the feeling of a great performance from an artist who feels transcendent as opposed to… one foot in the grave! As humans we can and have to accept our frailty and our inability to write the script how we want it every time. That’s pretty cool too.
Get well soon RLJ. We can wait until you’re better. By the way loving ‘look like a trapped miner’ analogy. Needs to become a lyric as The Beatles never used it. Take care!
Oh Rickie, really sorry that you're going through this. I saw you in Santa Cruz when you were sick, but that was many years ago. And you're correct, that as we grow older, we need to take care of ourselves. I hope you feel better ASAP.
Thank you for writing this. I’m looking forward to hearing you on this tour, but it’s way more important that you feel good and enjoy doing what you do. We’ll be listening when the time is right. We need you in the future even more. Hope you’re feeling better soon.

Thanks for describing that complicated feeling in words, Rickie. Sometimes the show can go on in different ways. Wishing you well!
